Pet action bar spells

If i activate certain pet spells in the spell book that aren't on the pet action bar, will they take effect or do they have to be on the pet action bar to take effect?

They'll still work. Anything that is lit up with the auto cast animation will go off by itself. Generally, you want to put your activation abilities on your pet bar and configure your auto casts through the spellbook such as Growl and Smack.

Abilities such as Call of the Wild and Rabid and others will auto proc if they're setup that way regardless of being on your bar.
They should not need to be on the action bar to autocast. A quick way to test this is to send your pet against a target dummy (or mob, if you need to test something like Cower), with your pet spellbook open. If the spell is used and subsequently goes on cooldown, it is definitely autocasting.
